Research Library Staff

Ariel Hammond M.I., Research Library Director

Ariel (Arie) Hammond is an information scientist with a background in digital libraries, archives, and rare books. Arie joined The Nat in September 2021 and plans to focus on digitizing resources and diversifying audiences (learn more).

Arie has worked at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Library, assisted environmental children’s libraries in Vietnam through WildAct, and served on the technology committee of Wildlife Insights. She focuses on digital libraries, digitization and data, and created the Camera Trap Technology Symposium at Google headquarters. Educated at UC San Diego and Rutgers, Arie has published on informal information behaviors and the adoption of new technologies to manage institutional information.

Arie cares for the objects in our Research Library, which includes a main library of some 56,000 volumes on natural history topics; a comprehensive archive of historical records, field notes, and correspondence from the Museum's early days; a collection of rare, antiquarian books and maps; and and an extensive collection of natural history fine art.


Juliana Clark

Juliana Clark is our Archives Assistant II. She focused on Archival Studies in UCLA's Master of Library Information Science Program, and is currently preserving and digitizing the Museum’s historical documents, photographs, and audio-visual media.

Melissa Behar

Melissa Behar works to preserve our rare books as a book conservator. Here she is shown re-constructing one of our large volumes of Flora Londinensis from 1777.
